FORTIFIED roofs

FORTIFIED roofs in Alabama

A rebuilt roof, built to a stronger standard.

FORTIFIED Roof is a standard from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. A roof built to it is checked by an independent evaluator, who issues the certificate.

In Alabama, the Strengthen Alabama Homes program offers grants to eligible homeowners, and insurers must honor the certificate with a discount. The program sets who qualifies and how the steps go, and the amounts can change.

  • We build to the standard

  • An independent evaluator inspects and signs the certificate

  • Each insurer sets its own discount, so ask yours

What it takes

What a FORTIFIED Roof needs

  • A sealed deck

The seams between the deck sheets are sealed, so water that gets under the shingles still stays out.

  • Stronger nailing

Ring-shank nails through the deck, which hold in high wind where smooth nails do not.

  • Rated materials

Shingles and edge metal chosen for the standard.

  • A certificate

An independent evaluator checks the work and issues it.

The order

How a FORTIFIED job goes

  1. 01

    Step 1: Before you sign

Check the program's rules and whether your home qualifies. We help you read them, and we do not apply for you.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The estimate

A written estimate for the FORTIFIED work, with the cost of each part shown.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The build

We build to the standard, and the evaluator checks the key steps.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The certificate

You send the certificate to your insurer and ask for the discount.

Questions

FORTIFIED questions

Will a FORTIFIED roof lower my premium?

Alabama requires insurers to honor the certificate with a discount. Each company decides the amount, so ask yours before you start.

Does a FORTIFIED roof stop hail damage?

It is built to hold up in high wind. Hail is a separate question, and shingle makers say their products are not warranted for hail damage.

Who issues the certificate?

An independent evaluator, not the roofer.

Do I need a new roof to get one?

Usually the certificate goes with a new roof or a deck upgrade. The program lists what it accepts.
